Globally, an estimated 285 million people have visual impairment – 43% due to Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE). In the underdeveloped and developing countries, it is one of the leading causes of blindness, causing severe educational, social, and economic impact on the individuals’ livelihood. The devices currently used for vision screening are bulky, expensive, and needs infrastructure and expertise to operate.

FoFo is a product of LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), a world-renowned, not-for-profit, eye care institution in Hyderabad, India. It has been invented to tackle the lack of accessible Refractive Error screening tools. Developed by adopting a human-centered design approach, this easy-to-use device has garnered the appreciation of vision experts all around the world. It has won numerous accolades including the ‘Clearly Vision Prize’ in 2016. Further, FoFo address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 12 and 17.

As vision and learning are intimately related, school children with vision disorders are often wrongly labeled as slow learners or even as having ADHD. Not being able to see the blackboard or read books clearly can significantly affect their academic performance. But unfortunately, most kids don’t realize their vision problem and hardly complain about it. If left uncorrected, children might have a continual progression of their myopia throughout the school years.
